Gameboyz: A Review

In Gameboyz, writer/director Paul Reeves introduces us to life in the video game business as only he could. At once, the concept combines the dry wit of “The Office” and the hilariously awkward nerd-appeal of “The IT Crowd”. It also provides a new edge by blurring the line between the real world and the “gaming universe”. All of this makes for a sitcom that should be very watchable to fans – and marketable to networks.

In the roughly 18 minute short film, each of the characters is presented and afforded the opportunity to showcase various layers of their respective personalities. The story follows Martin - a game artist as he meets his eccentric new co-workers during his first day on the job.

While all of the players turned in strong performances, three emerged as stand-outs. Stephen Brady's peddle to the floor, hardcore gamer, Don, handily walks away with most of his scenes. Vanessa-May Dolphin, as the elusive (is she or isn't she real) Anomaly proves that she can be every bit the bad-ass as a certain “tomb raider” who shall remain nameless. The single best delivery, however actually comes from Paul Reeves himself who gets the biggest laughs as another game designer named Stuart.

If this short film is a promise against future episodes, then I personally can't wait to get Gameboyz programmed into my PVR.
